MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the SR 50

Aprilia’s SR 50 was introduced in 1992 as the company’s first major sport-scooter nameplate and quickly became one of the defining small-displacement performance scooters of the 1990s. It was aimed at riders who wanted the practicality of a 50 cc scooter but with a sharper chassis, more aggressive styling, and a more motorcycle-like riding feel than the typical commuter machines of the era. Over time, the SR 50 evolved through several updates and sub-variants, including racing-inspired and liquid-cooled versions, while retaining the core identity that made the model famous: compact size, sporty handling, and youth-oriented appeal. The nameplate gained a strong enthusiast following in Europe and beyond, helped by Aprilia’s motorsport image and the model’s reputation for being one of the quickest and most distinctive scooters in its class. In later years, the SR 50 line continued in refreshed forms such as SR 50 R and related variants, but the original SR 50 nameplate’s production run ended by 2021. It is best remembered as the scooter that helped establish Aprilia as a serious player in the sporty 50 cc segment rather than just a maker of racing motorcycles.
