This nameplate first appeared in 1999 on the YZF-R7 OW-02, a rare limited-production supersport created as a high-spec homologation machine for superbike racing. It was positioned as a serious race-bred motorcycle rather than a mainstream street model, and its reputation has remained tied to its status as an exotic, highly focused Yamaha of the late 1990s. The original 1999 machine became one of the most distinctive entries in Yamaha’s R-Series history and is still remembered as a specialist performance model with strong enthusiast appeal.
After a long gap, Yamaha revived the name in 2021 for an entirely different motorcycle. The modern YZF-R7 was introduced as a middleweight supersport aimed at a broader range of riders, using Yamaha’s CP2 twin-cylinder platform and a lightweight chassis rather than the original’s homologation-racer formula. Although it shares the same nameplate, this second-era R7 has a very different character, market position, and engineering approach from the 1999 OW-02.
Because the nameplate was discontinued and later brought back, the YZF-R7 should be understood as having two separate production periods: the original 1999 limited-production superbike and the revived modern model that began in 2021.
