Yamaha’s 400-class Kodiak utility ATV was introduced for the North American, European, and Oceania markets in the early 1990s as the YFM400FW Kodiak, positioned as a rugged work-focused machine for ranch, forestry, and general off-road utility use. The nameplate was later refreshed for the 2000 model year with a fully automatic 400cc 4WD setup and Yamaha’s Ultramatic-style transmission approach, and Yamaha described it as a new generation of the Kodiak family. By the mid-2000s, the model was still being updated in market-specific forms, including the 2005 Kodiak 400 with revised suspension and bodywork. The 400-class Kodiak earned a strong reputation as a dependable utility ATV rather than a sport machine, and it helped establish Yamaha’s presence in the growing four-wheel ATV market before the Kodiak name later reappeared on different displacement classes in a separate era.
