This Yamaha cruiser nameplate debuted in 2013 as a new mid-size bobber-style model built around a slim, compact chassis and an air-cooled 950cc-class V-twin. Yamaha introduced it first for the North American market, positioning it as an urban-friendly cruiser with simple styling and a stripped-back, concentrated-mass look. The original release also included an R Spec version with a sportier, more premium presentation.
In Japan, the same family arrived later in 2013 as XVS950CU BOLT and BOLT-R / BOLT R-Spec, then continued under updated ABS-equipped versions in later model years. Yamaha refreshed the line several times, including styling and equipment changes and a move to a 941cc engine specification in later Japanese-market releases, while keeping the model’s core bobber identity intact. The Bolt became one of Yamaha’s best-known modern cruisers, notable for blending classic cruiser proportions with a relatively compact, minimalist format aimed at riders who wanted an easygoing machine with a more custom-inspired attitude than traditional full-dress cruisers.
