Introduced for the 1997 model year, this estate wagon nameplate replaced the 850 Estate and marked Volvo’s move to a softer, more modern design language while retaining the practical, safety-first character that defined the brand’s wagons. It began as the first-generation car launched in late 1996, with the Cross Country variant arriving shortly afterward to add a rugged, raised-ride-height interpretation of the same basic formula. The nameplate continued through a second generation for the 2001 model year and a thoroughly updated third generation that arrived for 2008, each keeping the core five-door wagon layout but steadily refining comfort, safety and premium positioning. Over its life, it became one of the most recognizable family wagons in the European and North American premium market, and it was especially important in carrying forward Volvo’s long estate-car tradition. Production ended in 2016, when the wagon line was phased out and replaced by a new flagship estate.
