Introduced in autumn 1990, this model was Volvo’s successor to the 740 and formed part of the 900-family refresh that also included the 960. It carried forward Volvo’s traditional rear-wheel-drive, boxy long-roof and sedan formula at a moment when the brand was beginning to move toward a newer generation of front-wheel-drive cars. The nameplate was offered in sedan and estate body styles, with the estate continuing Volvo’s long reputation for practical, durable family wagons.
The model is especially remembered for emphasizing safety and comfort rather than flash. Volvo used it to highlight a number of features that were advanced for its era, including standard three-point rear belts and an adjustable rear center head restraint, with an integrated child seat available on some versions. Those developments helped the car earn international recognition and reinforced Volvo’s image as a maker of safe, sensible vehicles.
In enthusiast circles, the estate version in particular is often seen as one of the last classic rear-wheel-drive Volvos. It bridged the gap between the company’s earlier square-shouldered sedans and wagons and the more modern cars that followed later in the decade. Production ran continuously from 1990 through 1998, after which the nameplate was discontinued and succeeded by Volvo’s newer S90 and V90-era models.
