MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the XC90

Introduced for the 2002 model year, this became the first SUV in Volvo’s modern lineup and the brand’s first global entry into the premium family-SUV segment. It was designed to combine the practical packaging buyers expected from an SUV with the safety-first identity that had long defined Volvo, and it quickly became one of the company’s most important nameplates. The original generation established the formula: three-row versatility, a tall wagon-like body, and an emphasis on road manners and occupant protection rather than off-road extremity. In 2015, the nameplate entered a new era with a completely redesigned second generation built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture, bringing a cleaner Scandinavian design language, new electronics, and a more upscale flagship position within the brand. Despite the generation change, the model remained a continuous production nameplate rather than a discontinued-and-revived badge. Over time it has evolved from Volvo’s first SUV into the company’s flagship large SUV and one of its most recognizable modern vehicles.
