This articulated bus chassis was introduced in the early 2000s as part of Volvo’s move toward a more standardized city-bus platform. It was designed around a side-mounted 9-litre engine and used for high-capacity urban applications, including articulated and bi-articulated layouts. Volvo’s 2005 annual report describes it as a new standardized chassis serving multiple markets, and that same year a low-floor version was launched for articulated and bi-articulated use. In practice, the nameplate became associated with Volvo’s largest-capacity city buses, especially in Scandinavia and Latin American BRT systems. The chassis underpinned notable vehicles such as the Volvo 7500 bi-articulated bus for Gothenburg and large Transantiago orders in Chile. Production ended in 2011, after which Volvo moved on to later articulated bus platforms.
