It was positioned as a value-focused alternative to the redesigned model, with simpler packaging and the older body style continuing under a new Limited suffix. The vehicle was offered only briefly, covering the 2017 and 2018 model years, and it served as a transition model while Volkswagen shifted the Tiguan line to the newer MQB-based generation. The Limited badge helped distinguish the older, smaller Tiguan from the newer long-wheelbase Tiguan sold alongside it in the U.S. After the 2018 model year, Volkswagen discontinued the Tiguan Limited nameplate and continued with the newer Tiguan line.
