This nameplate was Volkswagen’s North American branding for the B2-generation Passat/Santana family. It arrived for the 1982 model year and remained on sale through 1988, spanning a period when Volkswagen of America was repositioning its midsize cars away from the older Dasher name. In the U.S. market it was offered in sedan, hatchback, and wagon forms, with the wagon becoming the body style most strongly associated with the name. The car was based on Volkswagen’s B2 Passat architecture and shared its basic engineering with related Volkswagen and Audi models of the era, which gave it a more modern front-wheel-drive layout than the air-cooled Volkswagens that had built the brand’s earlier U.S. reputation. Over its run, the model moved from a somewhat utilitarian import to a more upscale midsize Volkswagen, and later examples reflected the company’s mid-1980s facelift and drivetrain updates. Production ended after the 1988 model year, making this a single, continuous U.S. nameplate run rather than a revived badge.
