The Story of the ID. Buzz

This electric people-mover revived one of Volkswagen’s most recognizable nameplates for the modern EV era. The vehicle was unveiled in March 2022 as the production-oriented successor to the brand’s long-running rear-engined microbus tradition, with Volkswagen positioning it as a fresh interpretation of the classic Bulli concept rather than a direct retro remake. The first market introduction arrived as a model-year 2023 vehicle in Europe, initially alongside a commercial Cargo version, and later expanded into other markets with additional body and wheelbase configurations.

The design draws heavily on the company’s transport heritage, especially the spirit of the original Type 2, but the nameplate belongs to Volkswagen’s ID. electric family and is built around contemporary battery-electric architecture. That gives it a role distinct from the older combustion-powered vans and MPVs that carried Volkswagen’s family and shuttle duties for decades. In practice, the vehicle is aimed at buyers who want the packaging and character of a modern van with zero-tailpipe-emission propulsion, whether for private family use or commercial hauling.

The nameplate quickly became notable for bridging two very different worlds: Volkswagen’s nostalgic “Bulli” identity and its newer EV strategy. The lineup also helped Volkswagen extend the ID. brand into a space where style, utility and cultural recognition matter as much as outright specifications. With the standard version joined by a longer-wheelbase derivative and market-specific variants, the model has grown beyond a one-off halo vehicle into a core part of Volkswagen’s contemporary electric commercial/passenger offering.
