MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Atlas

This nameplate arrived in the United States for the 2018 model year as Volkswagen’s large, three-row SUV for North America. It was developed specifically for American buyers and assembled at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee plant, giving the brand a larger family hauler positioned above the Tiguan. The vehicle marked an important expansion of Volkswagen’s U.S. SUV lineup and became the company’s mainstream seven-passenger offering in the market.

From the start, the model was conceived around practicality and interior space rather than performance marketing, and it helped Volkswagen compete more directly in the crowded midsize SUV segment. The original version introduced the modern Atlas identity, while related concepts and later derivatives broadened the family into a small range of Atlas-branded SUVs. In 2024, the model received a substantial refresh with updated exterior styling, an upgraded cabin, and revised powertrain offerings, reinforcing its role as a core Volkswagen utility vehicle in North America.

The nameplate has remained in continuous production since its launch, and Volkswagen has continued to treat it as a key Chattanooga-built product. Its significance lies less in niche enthusiast status and more in how it gave Volkswagen a true volume-oriented three-row SUV tailored to the U.S. market.
