This nameplate was introduced in 2017 as Volkswagen’s stylish fastback grand tourer, positioned above the brand’s mainstream midsize sedan offering and aimed at buyers who wanted a more emotional, upscale alternative. It arrived with a low, sweeping four-door body and a strong emphasis on design, space, and long-distance comfort. In 2020, the model received a major update and expanded into a second body style, the Shooting Brake, giving the range a more practical estate-like variant while keeping the same basic fastback identity. That update also broadened the lineup with electrified and performance-oriented versions, including the R-badged flagship. Volkswagen later said the model would be discontinued as part of a broader shift toward higher-volume products, and the final car left the Emden plant in March 2024. As a result, the nameplate’s continuous production run spans the 2017 to 2024 model years.
