The Story of the Speed Triple RS

This nameplate marked Triumph’s higher-spec evolution of the long-running Speed Triple family, arriving for the 2018 model year as the sportier, more premium sibling to the standard roadster. It continued Triumph’s original naked-bike formula: aggressive styling, a torque-rich inline-three character, and a focus on real-world road performance with an emphasis on handling and rider technology rather than full fairing race-bike cosplay.

The 2018 update was notable because it represented a substantial step forward for the Speed Triple line. Triumph paired the revised 1050cc triple with a sharper chassis package, upgraded electronics, and higher-end braking and suspension components, giving the model a more focused and polished character than earlier generations. The RS sat at the top of the range and was aimed at riders who wanted the most performance-oriented version of the Speed Triple without moving into a full supersport machine.

Historically, the Speed Triple itself dates back to 1994 and helped define the modern factory streetfighter category, but this RS-branded variant is tied specifically to the later 2018-era generation. It carried the nameplate through the end of that 1050cc cycle, after which Triumph replaced it with the all-new 1200cc Speed Triple family. As a result, this version occupies a clearly bounded production period: it is the final and most developed form of the pre-1200 Speed Triple RS roadster.
