Introduced for the 1999 model year, this full-size pickup marked Toyota’s first entry into the North American full-size truck market and the company’s first full-size pickup built in the region. It was developed specifically for American truck buyers, with early production centered at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana. In 2008, assembly moved to Toyota’s Texas plant in San Antonio, where it has remained the truck’s home base. The nameplate has continued through multiple generations, evolving from an early V8-powered workhorse into a more sophisticated full-size pickup with increasingly strong towing, comfort and technology credentials. Over time, it has become one of Toyota’s most important truck nameplates in the United States and a long-running competitor in the full-size pickup segment. Despite being a Japanese brand’s truck, it was built around American truck tastes from the start, which helped define its identity and market position. The nameplate remains in production today.
