Toyota introduced this plug-in hybrid compact SUV for the 2021 model year, unveiling it in late 2019 and bringing it to market in 2020 as the first-ever RAV4 Prime. It represented a new electrified step for the RAV4 line, pairing the familiar compact-SUV formula with a PHEV powertrain and standard all-wheel drive, while positioning itself as the performance-oriented, top-spec member of the RAV4 family. Early model years were offered in SE and XSE grades, and the nameplate became known for blending daily electric commuting with long-distance hybrid flexibility. For the 2025 model year, Toyota changed the name to RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, ending the use of the Prime nameplate after the 2024 model year.
