The Story of the Semi

Tesla’s Class 8 battery-electric Semi was first unveiled in 2017 as the company’s entry into heavy-duty trucking, aimed at long-haul freight with a fully electric powertrain and a cab-forward design centered on driver visibility and efficiency. After an extended development period, Tesla began delivering production Semis in 2022, marking the nameplate’s first model year in customer use. The truck was positioned as a commercial fleet vehicle rather than a consumer product, with early deliveries going to major fleet customers and Tesla establishing dedicated charging and service support around the platform. Unlike a conventional diesel tractor, the Semi is part of Tesla’s broader effort to electrify transport at the commercial end of the market, and it has become one of the company’s most closely watched non-passenger vehicles. As of the latest official Tesla information, the Semi remains an active product and has not been discontinued.
