Tesla introduced this compact electric crossover as a new addition to its lineup in March 2019, positioning it below the larger Model X and building it on the Model 3 platform. Production began in January 2020, with customer deliveries starting in early 2020, making 2020 the first model year for the nameplate. From the start, it was aimed at buyers who wanted a more practical, family-friendly Tesla without moving up to the larger SUV. The vehicle quickly became one of the brand’s most important global volume models and helped define Tesla’s mainstream identity beyond its earlier flagship cars. Over time, Tesla has continued to evolve it rather than replace it, and the company has described later updates as a new-generation Model Y with deliveries beginning in North America in March. The nameplate has remained in continuous production since launch, so there is no separate discontinued-and-returned production period to distinguish.
