The Story of the V-Strom 1000

This nameplate first appeared in 2002, when Suzuki introduced the original V-Strom 1000 as a new kind of sport-adventure tourer. It was positioned as a large-displacement machine that blended long-distance comfort with the upright stance and all-road styling associated with Suzuki’s adventure models. In Suzuki’s own historical material, the model is listed as a 2002 debut, establishing it as the first V-Strom 1000.

After an early production run, the nameplate returned in 2014 as the V-Strom 1000 ABS. Suzuki described this version as a full model change of the previous-generation bike, with updated styling and modern rider aids. That revival carried the V-Strom concept forward for a new era and re-established the model as the flagship of Suzuki’s sport-adventure touring lineup in several export markets. In 2017, Suzuki further revised the bike, keeping the same nameplate while refining the bodywork and equipment.

The V-Strom 1000 nameplate’s later history was ultimately overtaken by the all-new V-STROM 1050 range unveiled for 2020, which replaced the 1000-class model in Suzuki’s lineup. Because the nameplate appeared in separate production periods rather than one uninterrupted run, its history should be treated as a discontinued model that was later revived.
