This Swedish compact executive nameplate debuted for the 1998 model year as a lightly reworked continuation of the previous compact Saab, carrying over that car’s basic body shell but introducing a revised front end, updated safety equipment and a substantial round of chassis changes. It quickly became the brand’s mainstream passenger-car line and established the modern numbering scheme that distinguished it from earlier 900-series cars. A major second chapter arrived for the 2003 model year, when a fully redesigned generation moved the car further upmarket with a broader body lineup and a more contemporary GM-based structure while still retaining the brand’s turbocharged, driver-focused character. The second generation is the version most enthusiasts associate with the badge, especially in performance trim and in convertible form, both of which helped keep the car visible long after Saab’s wider market presence had shrunk. Production under Saab Automobile ended in 2011 during the company’s collapse, but the nameplate returned briefly in 2013–2014 under NEVS, which built a small run of updated sedans in Trollhättan before the project faded again. As a result, this badge has two clearly separate production eras rather than one uninterrupted run.
