MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the R1T

This all-electric pickup marked the launch of Rivian’s first passenger vehicle and became the brand’s opening statement in the emerging electric truck segment. After years of development and public previews, the first production examples reached the line in Normal, Illinois in 2021, with customer deliveries beginning shortly afterward and the model year designated for 2022. That makes 2022 the earliest model year for the nameplate.

The truck was positioned from the start as an adventure-focused vehicle rather than a traditional work-oriented pickup. Its design combined a crew-cab body, short bed, and distinctive outdoor-leaning packaging with a quiet battery-electric drivetrain and a strong emphasis on cargo flexibility, off-road ability, and digital features. Early launch versions established the identity of the nameplate, and later revisions expanded the lineup with additional motor configurations and updated hardware while keeping the same core mission.

In production history terms, this is a single continuous nameplate without any verified discontinuation or revival gap. It entered the market as one of the first modern electric pickups and helped define Rivian’s brand image around exploration, recreation, and utility. Because production is ongoing, there is no final model year to record at this time.
