MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Sportsman 850

Polaris added this big-bore Sportsman variant for the 2015 model year, positioning it as a tough recreation-and-utility ATV in the brand’s long-running Sportsman family. It arrived alongside other mid-2010s Sportsman updates, with the nameplate used for a standard two-seat machine and related touring and special-edition versions built around the same 850cc platform. In the years that followed, the 850 badge remained one of Polaris’s core Sportsman offerings rather than a short-lived one-off, and it continued to evolve through trim and styling updates while keeping the same basic task-to-trail mission.

Historically, the nameplate is important because it marked Polaris’s move from the earlier Sportsman XP 850 H.O. era toward a cleaner, more straightforward naming convention. The model has stayed focused on the formula that made the Sportsman line popular: automatic utility convenience, on-demand all-wheel drive, comfortable independent rear suspension, and enough capability to work during the week and trail ride on the weekend. Polaris still lists the model in its current lineup, so there is no confirmed final model year at this time.
