The RANGER nameplate arrived as Polaris’s entry into the modern side-by-side utility category, with the first RANGER 6x6 introduced for the 1999 model year. Built to bridge the gap between an ATV and a small utility vehicle, it was designed around a ride-in cockpit, steering wheel, and work-oriented carrying ability rather than the handlebar layout of a traditional four-wheeler. From the start, the formula emphasized practical off-road use, outdoor work, and easy drivability, and it quickly became one of the company’s most important off-road families.
Over time, the RANGER line evolved far beyond that original 6x6 concept. Polaris added more conventional 4x4 and multi-passenger configurations, including crew-oriented versions, while continually broadening the range with stronger drivetrains, improved suspension, higher comfort, and more weather protection and accessory options. The nameplate became the foundation for a large utility side-by-side lineup that served both recreational and work customers, especially ranchers, landowners, hunters, and other off-road users who wanted more capacity and versatility than an ATV could offer.
The RANGER also helped define Polaris’s broader off-road identity. It became one of the company’s core vehicle families and a long-running market leader in the utility side-by-side segment. Although the product line has been refreshed repeatedly and now spans many trims and body styles, the RANGER name has remained continuous since its debut, with no separate production break or revival period.
