This nameplate first appeared for the 1972 model year as the U.S.-market version of the factory’s large transverse-V-twin touring/cruising line. It was created during the expansion of the company’s big-block twins and positioned as a more lavish alternative to the earlier Ambassador, with a strong emphasis on comfort, full fenders, and long-distance road presence. In its original run, it became one of the most recognizable Italian heavyweight motorcycles sold in America and is closely associated with the loop-frame era that defined the brand’s early success in the cruiser and police-bike market.
The name returned decades later on the modern 1400cc heritage cruiser introduced in the 2010s. That revival deliberately echoed the earlier machine’s styling cues, using broad floorboards, spoked wheels, heavy chrome, and a relaxed silhouette to tap into the same transatlantic touring image. Although the engineering was thoroughly contemporary, the revival was presented as a direct nod to the classic U.S.-focused grand cruiser that helped establish the brand’s reputation for distinctive, shaft-driven V-twins.
Because the nameplate was used in two clearly separate eras, it should be treated as having multiple production periods rather than a single continuous run.
