MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Outlander Sport

This compact SUV nameplate was introduced in North America for the 2011 model year, when Mitsubishi began selling the global RVR/ASX under the Outlander Sport badge in the United States. It was positioned as the brand’s smaller, more urban-friendly crossover, below the larger Outlander, and became one of Mitsubishi’s key volume models in the North American market. Mitsubishi later started U.S. production at its Illinois plant in 2012, reflecting the model’s role as a core regional product. In Mitsubishi’s broader global lineup, the same underlying vehicle has been marketed under different names in different regions, but the Outlander Sport identity has remained in continuous use without a confirmed break in production. Over time, the nameplate has also been applied in some markets to Mitsubishi’s compact SUV offerings outside North America, but it is best known as the long-running North American badge for the company’s compact crossover line.
