Mercedes-Benz introduced this compact model in 2005 as part of its expansion into the small-car market, positioning it above the A-Class with a more spacious, high-roof “sports tourer” concept. The original version arrived as the W245 generation and established the nameplate as a practical, family-oriented hatchback with a distinctly Mercedes interpretation of compact packaging. A second generation followed with the W246, refining the formula with a more conventional car-like stance and broader international appeal. The line was redesigned again as the W247, which continued the nameplate’s focus on everyday usability, comfort and premium compact-class practicality. Over time, the model also served as a platform for notable advanced powertrain experiments, including electric-drive and fuel-cell derivatives that reflected Mercedes-Benz’s broader technology development. The nameplate has remained part of the brand’s current entry-level passenger-car lineup, and it is still offered today in its latest generation.
