MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the GLA-Class

This compact SUV nameplate marked Mercedes-Benz’s entry into the premium small-crossover class, arriving in the 2014 model year after its initial reveal in 2013. It was positioned below the brand’s larger SUVs as a more urban, car-like alternative with a higher seating position and the practical packaging expected of a modern utility vehicle. Early production was part of Mercedes-Benz’s broader expansion of its compact-car family, and the model quickly became one of the brand’s most important volume vehicles.

A full redesign followed for the second generation, unveiled in late 2019 for the 2020 model year. That update moved the vehicle further upmarket in design, space efficiency, and technology, while keeping the formula of a compact premium SUV aimed at everyday usability. The second generation also broadened the model’s appeal through performance-oriented AMG variants, helping the nameplate span mainstream luxury, sporty, and enthusiast-friendly versions.

In 2026, Mercedes-Benz revealed an all-new iteration of the nameplate, underscoring that it remains a continuing part of the company’s SUV lineup rather than a discontinued model. Across its history, the nameplate has been defined by its role as the smallest Mercedes-Benz SUV, its city-friendly proportions, and its importance in bringing the brand’s compact-car architecture into the crossover market.
