The Story of the Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport was introduced by Land Rover in the mid-2000s as a more road-focused, performance-oriented companion to the traditional Range Rover. It first appeared for the 2005 model year, with its world debut taking place in early 2005 after being announced in late 2004. From the start, it was positioned as a premium SUV that blended Range Rover luxury with sharper handling and a more athletic character.

The nameplate has remained in continuous production, but it has passed through three distinct generations. The original Sport established the formula and helped define the modern luxury performance SUV segment for Land Rover. A second-generation model arrived for the 2014 model year with a major redesign and a new lightweight aluminum architecture, marking a significant evolution in size, construction and refinement. The third generation launched in 2022 and continued the same basic mission with a more modern design, updated technology and electrified powertrain options.

Over time, the Sport has become one of Land Rover’s most important nameplates and a core part of the wider Range Rover family. It has been especially successful in North America and has been widely associated with the brand’s move toward high-performance luxury SUVs. Despite its sportier emphasis, it has always retained genuine off-road capability, keeping it aligned with the Land Rover character rather than becoming a purely on-road crossover.
