The Story of the LR3

This nameplate was used in North America for the third-generation Discovery, which was launched at the 2004 New York Motor Show and reached the market as a 2005 model year vehicle. It marked a major redesign for the brand’s mid-size, three-row SUV, moving to a more modern, integrated body-on-frame package and introducing a more upscale, family-oriented position without losing the rugged off-road character that defined the line. In other markets the same vehicle was sold as Discovery 3, while North America used this separate badge. The model carried the nameplate through the end of its run, with the next generation introduced for 2010 model year as LR4. Enthusiasts remember it as the first modern Discovery sold in the U.S. under a distinct North American name, and as an important bridge between the earlier Discovery and the later LR4.
