MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Freelander

Introduced in 1997, this compact Land Rover marked an important shift for the brand by bringing its off-road expertise into a smaller, more road-friendly package. It was developed as a modern compact SUV with a focus on everyday usability while still retaining the core capability expected from Land Rover. The model quickly became one of the company’s most successful vehicles and helped define the premium compact 4x4 segment in Europe. Early examples were notable for their blend of car-like packaging and traditional Land Rover ability, including the availability of hill descent control, which became one of its signature technical talking points. The original production run continued through 2006, after which it was replaced by an all-new successor rather than continued under the same first-generation form. In hindsight, it stands as a landmark vehicle for the brand: the compact Land Rover that broadened the company’s appeal beyond its larger, more utilitarian models while still keeping a clear connection to the marque’s off-road heritage.
