The Story of the LR4

The LR4 nameplate was introduced for the 2010 model year as Land Rover’s updated, renamed successor to the LR3 in North America. It carried forward the brand’s traditional full-size, body-on-frame off-road SUV formula, but with revised styling, a more upscale interior, and a stronger emphasis on refinement while preserving the model’s core terrain capability and seven-passenger versatility. Early LR4s were powered by a V8, and the truck quickly became known as a premium, highly capable all-purpose SUV rather than a soft-roader.

For the 2014 model year, Land Rover reworked the LR4’s powertrain with a supercharged V6 and an eight-speed automatic, while continuing to position it as the brand’s rugged flagship for families who wanted genuine off-road ability. The nameplate remained in U.S. and Canadian showrooms through the 2016 model year. For 2017, Land Rover brought back the Discovery name in North America and replaced the LR4 with the all-new fifth-generation Discovery, ending the LR4 badge’s single continuous production run.
