The Story of the Range Rover

Land Rover’s flagship luxury SUV debuted in 1970 and quickly established a new niche by combining genuine off-road ability with the comfort and refinement expected of a premium road car. The original version was introduced as a two-door model, with a four-door variant arriving later as the concept evolved. Over time, the vehicle became a benchmark for the luxury SUV class and a defining product for the brand.

Its history is marked by steady evolution rather than interruption. The first generation ran for more than two decades, followed by successive redesigns in 1994, 2001, 2012 and 2021. Each new era retained the core formula of capability, refinement and high-end positioning while adding more advanced technology, improved comfort and increasingly luxurious appointments. The nameplate also expanded into longer-wheelbase and special-series variants, reinforcing its role at the top of the lineup.

Beyond its market importance, the model has broad enthusiast and cultural significance as one of the earliest true luxury SUVs. It helped define the idea that a vehicle could be equally at home in formal urban settings and on difficult terrain, and it remains one of the most recognizable British automotive nameplates still in production today.
