This model was introduced for the 2001 model year as a larger-displacement evolution of Kawasaki’s retro-styled ZRX series, bringing the familiar upright, muscular roadster look into the 1,200cc class. It was launched alongside a half-faired sibling, but the version in question was the naked/small-bikini-fairing road sport variant aimed at riders who wanted classic UJM-inspired styling with more modern performance and chassis refinement than the outgoing 1100cc machine. The first examples reached markets in 2001, and the nameplate continued as an annual model through 2008.
The bike became known for blending old-school visual cues with contemporary hardware, including the big inline-four architecture and chassis updates that gave it a more stable, grown-up character than earlier ZRX models. Across its run, it was positioned as a high-performance standard rather than a full supersport, and that identity made it especially popular with riders who wanted strong midrange, everyday usability, and a deliberately nostalgic silhouette. In later years, the model line was effectively succeeded in Japan by the ZRX1200 DAEG for 2009, but that was a separate revival and not part of this nameplate’s original continuous production run. The original 1200R remained the definitive carbureted, classic-looking member of the family for the 2001–2008 period.
