MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Z400

Kawasaki introduced this lightweight Z-family naked bike for the 2019 model year as an entry-level supernaked aimed at riders who wanted approachable size with the styling and attitude of the larger Z models. It was developed as the upright, street-focused counterpart to Kawasaki’s Ninja 400, sharing the same basic small-displacement twin-cylinder platform while trading fairings for a more minimalist roadster format. That formula gave the model a clear role in the lineup: a compact, easy-to-ride machine with the visual identity of Kawasaki’s modern Z series. The model was carried through the early 2020s and remained part of Kawasaki’s small-displacement street range until the Z500 arrived as its successor for 2024, marking the end of the Z400 nameplate’s first production run.
