Kawasaki introduced this youth-oriented off-road nameplate for the 2008 model year as the KLX140, positioning it as an approachable trail bike between the smaller KLX110 family and larger full-size off-road machines. The original model built its reputation on a simple air-cooled four-stroke single, manual clutch, and easy handling, which made it a popular entry point for beginner and smaller-framed riders. Kawasaki continued the KLX140 through the 2010s and, by the 2020 model year, offered it in multiple sizes, including standard, L, and G variants. For the 2021 model year, the nameplate was updated to KLX140R, reflecting a fresh model designation while keeping the same basic concept: a lightweight, trail-friendly motorcycle centered on easy operation and low-maintenance off-road fun. The current KLX140R family expands that idea into standard, L, and F versions to suit different rider sizes and trail-use preferences. The nameplate remains in production today, and its history is best understood as a continuous evolution from the original KLX140 into the KLX140R era rather than as separate, discontinued-and-revived runs.
