MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the KLR650

Introduced for the 1987 model year, this long-running Kawasaki dual-sport became one of the brand’s best-known adventure-oriented singles, valued for its simple mechanical layout, go-anywhere character, and long-distance durability. It spent its first production era spanning the late 1980s through the 2010s as a practical, affordable machine that blended on-road usefulness with real off-pavement capability, earning a loyal following among commuters, travelers, and backcountry riders alike. Kawasaki later brought the nameplate back for the 2022 model year after a break in production, marking a second chapter for the model rather than a continuation of the original run. The revived version kept the same basic dual-sport mission while updating the platform with modern rider conveniences and revised engineering. Across both eras, the nameplate has remained closely associated with straightforward reliability, simplicity, and a deliberately unpretentious approach to adventure riding.
