The I-Mark was Isuzu’s U.S. subcompact nameplate for the Gemini, introduced for the 1981 model year as the brand built out its own North American passenger-car identity. Early cars were rear-wheel drive and reflected the small Japanese sedan-and-coupe formula of the period, but the nameplate quickly became better known for the 1985 redesign, when the I-Mark switched to front-wheel drive and adopted a more modern hatchback-and-sedan body style. Across its run, the car occupied Isuzu’s entry-level passenger-car slot and was sold as a practical, economical import with a distinctly unflashy personality.
The model’s history is really two eras of the same nameplate rather than separate revivals. The first-generation U.S. I-Mark covered the early 1980s with conventional proportions and rear-drive hardware, while the later cars aligned more closely with the evolving Gemini family overseas and brought in the sharper packaging that defined many mid-1980s compacts. Enthusiasts tend to remember the car for its oddball appeal, lightweight feel, and the more interesting performance-oriented versions that appeared near the end of the run.
By the late 1980s, the I-Mark had become one of the more distinctive Japanese economy cars sold in America, especially in RS and turbocharged forms, which gave the little Isuzu a far sportier image than its basic trim levels suggested. The nameplate ended after the 1989 model year, closing out a compact-car chapter that helped establish Isuzu’s U.S. passenger-car presence.
