MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Roadmaster Dark Horse

Indian added this blacked-out touring nameplate for the 2020 model year, expanding the Roadmaster line with a darker, more custom-oriented alternative to the chrome-heavy flagship. It sits within the brand’s large-displacement touring family and retains the Roadmaster’s long-distance mission: full fairing, integrated luggage, passenger accommodations, and a premium comfort focus aimed at riders who want a luxury tourer with a more aggressive visual theme.

The Dark Horse treatment followed Indian Motorcycle’s broader use of the Dark Horse badge on other models, but the Roadmaster version is its own distinct touring nameplate rather than a simple trim package. Its identity is defined by muted finishes and a factory-custom look, giving the model a more stripped-down appearance while preserving the comfort, storage, electronics, and weather protection expected from an upper-tier touring motorcycle. In the lineup, it appealed to riders who wanted a Roadmaster without the traditional bright chrome presentation.

The model debuted in 2020 and remained part of Indian’s touring range through later model years, alongside the standard Roadmaster and other premium variants. Over time, Indian continued to update the family with new equipment and annual color changes, but the core concept stayed consistent: a fully equipped long-haul motorcycle presented in a darker, more modern style. That combination made the nameplate notable both as a touring flagship and as one of the clearest expressions of Indian’s blacked-out factory custom direction.
