MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Indian Challenger Dark Horse

This nameplate was introduced for the 2020 model year as the blacked-out version of Indian Motorcycle’s all-new Challenger platform. The Challenger line marked the brand’s move deeper into the modern performance-bagger segment, combining a chassis-mounted fairing, liquid-cooled V-twin power, and rider-focused electronics in a long-distance touring package. The Dark Horse variant arrived at launch as the more aggressive, darker-styled interpretation, with blackout finishes that set it apart from the chrome-trimmed touring models in the range.

From its debut, this model was positioned as a premium American bagger with a sportier personality than traditional full-dress touring motorcycles. Indian Motorcycle’s own launch materials for 2020 identified the Challenger Dark Horse as part of the new Challenger family, and the model has remained part of the lineup in subsequent years. Over time, the nameplate has continued to evolve alongside the broader Challenger series, including updates to styling, technology, and engine offerings, while retaining the same core identity: a performance-oriented touring motorcycle with a low-slung, modern bagger stance.

Because the nameplate has remained in continuous production since its introduction, there is no separate earlier and later production era to split apart. The model is best understood as a current-generation Indian bagger nameplate that began with the 2020 Challenger launch and has stayed in production since then.
