MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FTR

Indian Motorcycle introduced this nameplate for the 2019 model year as a street-going performance model inspired by the company’s flat track racing program and the FTR750 race bike. It arrived first as the FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S, with Indian positioning it as a new kind of American V-twin street motorcycle rather than a traditional cruiser or bagger. The model’s identity was built around flat-track styling, an upright riding position, and a more aggressive, performance-focused character than most of the brand’s earlier lineup. Over time, the name was simplified to FTR, while the motorcycle family expanded into several variants and special editions that explored different mixes of road-biased performance, scrambler-inspired cues, and premium trim. The platform has remained part of Indian Motorcycle’s range since its debut, so there is no completed production end date to record. Enthusiasts often view it as one of the brand’s clearest modern links between Indian’s racing heritage and its contemporary street motorcycles, marking a major shift in the company’s styling and product strategy when it launched in 2019.
