Hyundai’s Ioniq was introduced in 2016 as the company’s first dedicated eco-friendly model, developed around a purpose-built platform rather than adapted from an existing conventional car. It launched as a single nameplate with three electrified powertrain choices—hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric—making it one of the first mainstream Hyundai models to be conceived from the start around alternative propulsion. The car was positioned as a practical, efficiency-focused compact model with a clean, aerodynamic shape and a strong emphasis on everyday usability.
The Ioniq nameplate belonged to a distinct vehicle line, not the later IONIQ electric sub-brand that Hyundai launched in 2020 for its new generation of dedicated battery-electric models such as IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6. That later branding built on the recognition created by the original car, but it represents a separate chapter in Hyundai’s electrification strategy.
The original Ioniq remained on sale through the early 2020s and was officially phased out in 2022, ending its first and only continuous production run. It is remembered as an important early step in Hyundai’s move toward mass-market electrification and as a milestone in the company’s modern eco-car history.
