MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the VT1100 (Shadow Ace Tourer)

This Honda cruiser was introduced as a touring-oriented variant of the VT1100 Shadow family and appeared as an early-release 1998 model. It built on the American Classic Edition’s retro styling, but added factory touring equipment such as a windshield and hard saddlebags to create a more distance-friendly machine straight from the showroom. In Honda’s lineup, it sat between the more stripped Shadow cruisers and the larger, premium touring motorcycles, aiming at riders who wanted classic V-twin styling with practical long-haul usefulness.

The model used the VT1100 platform’s familiar 1,099 cc liquid-cooled V-twin architecture, but its real identity came from the combination of relaxed cruiser proportions and ready-made touring hardware. That made it one of the more distinctive 1100-class Shadows of the era, because it was not simply a standard cruiser with accessories bolted on later; it was marketed from the start as a dressed-up tourer. Enthusiasts often remember it as one of the first Honda cruisers to blend old-school American styling cues with genuine factory touring convenience.

Production ran as a single continuous period from the 1998 model year through 2001, after which the nameplate disappeared from Honda’s North American 1100 lineup. It is a relatively short-lived model compared with some other Shadow variants, which adds to its appeal among collectors and fans of Honda’s 1990s cruiser era. The combination of limited production, factory bags, and vintage-inspired styling has helped it remain a recognizable and well-regarded member of the VT1100 Shadow family.
