MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the SE50PI

Honda’s small Elite scooter family used a few closely related model codes and market names, but this specific SE50 entry belongs to the 50cc two-stroke Elite S / R generation introduced for the 1987 model year. In the United States, the SE50 was a one-year model; Honda then replaced it with the later SA50-based Elite SR / LX line for 1988. A restricted SE50P version was also sold in some markets, including moped-class versions marketed under Elite 50 and Iowa Elite names.

The SE50 stood out from earlier Honda 50cc scooters because it used fresh bodywork and a more modern, angular design while carrying forward Honda’s V-matic automatic scooter formula. It was aimed at riders who wanted a compact, easy-to-ride commuter with a livelier personality than the company’s more basic step-throughs. Compared with the earlier Aero 50, the SE50 was positioned with a more upscale, sporty image and was available with both unrestricted and restricted tuning depending on local regulations.

Historically, the SE50 is remembered as part of Honda’s strong 1980s scooter era. It arrived at the tail end of Honda’s 50cc two-stroke street scooter run in North America and helped set the stage for the next Elite generation that followed immediately after it. Because it was sold for such a short time in the U.S., it is now a relatively uncommon model and is especially interesting to scooter enthusiasts who collect Honda’s late-1980s 50cc machines.
