The Story of the RC213V

Honda introduced this MotoGP prototype for the 2012 season, when Grand Prix racing moved to the new 1,000 cc era. It replaced the previous factory premier-class machine and carried forward much of Honda’s racing development philosophy, but with a fresh 90-degree V4 layout designed around the new regulation set. Built for the top level of road racing rather than road use, the bike quickly became the core of Honda’s modern Grand Prix effort.

Its early years were especially significant. The model became the platform for one of the most successful stretches in Honda’s MotoGP history, highlighted by championship-winning campaigns and a string of major race victories. The machine is closely associated with riders such as Casey Stoner and Marc Márquez, and it formed the basis for Honda’s factory effort through the following decade and beyond.

The nameplate has remained central to Honda’s premier-class motorcycle racing program, evolving continuously through development updates rather than through clearly separated generations in the way a street motorcycle might. Over time, it has come to symbolize Honda’s factory racing identity in MotoGP: a purpose-built prototype that reflects the company’s long commitment to Grand Prix competition, technical experimentation, and world championship racing success.
