MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Jazz

Honda introduced this small hatchback in Japan in June 2001 under the Fit name, and exported it to other regions as the Jazz, making the nameplate one of Honda’s key global small-car lines. From the start, the model was defined by a tall, efficient body, clever packaging, and a highly flexible interior that helped it stand out in the subcompact class. Its reputation was built less on outright performance than on everyday usefulness, with roomy cabin space, easy urban maneuverability, and Honda’s Magic Seat layout becoming signature traits.

The nameplate spread quickly beyond Japan during the early 2000s, reaching Europe, Thailand, and other overseas markets, and Honda treated it as a major world model rather than a regional variant. Over time it evolved through multiple generations while staying true to the original formula: compact outside, surprisingly versatile inside. The Jazz also became an important showcase for Honda’s small-car engineering, including hybrid versions in some markets and later versions that continued to emphasize practicality and efficiency.

In Europe, the Jazz became one of Honda’s better-known passenger cars, especially for buyers who wanted a sensible city-friendly hatchback with unusually adaptable packaging. It has also served as a foundation for special trims and sportier derivative versions in select markets, but its core identity has remained that of a practical, space-efficient global hatchback. The nameplate is still in production today.
