The Story of the Gold Wing

Honda’s flagship touring motorcycle nameplate was introduced for the 1975 model year as the GL1000 Gold Wing, initially aimed at the North American market. The original machine was developed as a high-speed touring motorcycle rather than a full luxury tourer, and it quickly established a reputation for smoothness, long-distance comfort, and technical ambition. Its horizontally opposed engine layout and shaft-drive configuration helped set it apart from many contemporary rivals, while Honda’s packaging choices gave the bike a distinctive character from the start.

Over time, the Gold Wing evolved in response to the way riders actually used it. Owners in North America especially helped shape the model’s identity by adding touring accessories and fairings, pushing Honda to develop the Gold Wing into a more complete long-distance motorcycle. That shift led to successive generations with larger engines, more comfort features, and increasingly integrated touring equipment. Key eras included the GL1100, GL1200, GL1500, and GL1800, each marking a major step in refinement and touring capability.

The nameplate also became closely associated with major motorcycle milestones. Honda moved Gold Wing production between Japan and the United States during its history, and the model gained further notoriety through notable engineering firsts, including the world’s first production motorcycle airbag on a Gold Wing variant. A major redesign in 2018 updated the bike for a new generation of touring riders while preserving its role as Honda’s most prestigious long-distance model.

The Gold Wing remains one of the most recognizable names in motorcycling, admired for its blend of engineering sophistication, touring comfort, and long-running presence at the top of Honda’s motorcycle lineup.
