The Story of the Foreman Rubicon

Honda’s Foreman Rubicon nameplate was introduced for the 2000 model year as an ATV in Honda’s FourTrax utility lineup, marking Honda’s push to pair a work-focused off-road chassis with its then-new Hondamatic/HFT automatic transmission technology. Honda’s own history materials identify the Rubicon’s launch in 2000, and later official references show the model continuing in the FourTrax Foreman Rubicon 4x4 family rather than disappearing and returning as a separate revival. The name itself was inspired by the Rubicon River, underscoring the model’s intended image as a machine for tough, boundary-pushing terrain rather than a leisure-only ATV.

Over time, the Rubicon evolved through multiple updates and naming refinements while staying in continuous production. Honda has used the Foreman Rubicon as a flagship rec/utility ATV platform, and the model has remained part of the company’s current powersports lineup in 4x4 form. Its history is best understood as a single continuous run that began in 2000 and has expanded through successive mechanical and equipment updates, including Honda’s later automatic-transmission developments, rather than as separate disconnected generations or a discontinued-and-revived nameplate.

Within Honda’s ATV range, the Foreman Rubicon has built a reputation as a durable, work-oriented machine with an emphasis on ease of operation, traction, and utility. It sits at the practical end of Honda’s off-road lineup and has become one of the company’s better-known ATV nameplates among ranch, trail, and recreation buyers.
