The Story of the XL 1200

The XL 1200 nameplate belongs to Harley-Davidson’s Sportster line, which traces its roots to the 1957 XL Sportster but did not appear in 1200cc form until the 1988 model year, when Harley-Davidson enlarged its Evolution-powered Sportster family to create the first 1200cc version. That change marked a major turning point for the line: the 1200 became the performance-oriented big-displacement Sportster, offered across a wide range of variants over time rather than as a single fixed body style.

Across its run, the XL 1200 badge appeared on several different Sportster interpretations, including roadster, custom, low-seat, touring-leaning, and dark/custom trims. While the styling, chassis details, and feature content evolved, the essential identity remained the same: a traditional air-cooled Harley-Davidson Sportster with the larger 1200cc Evolution engine, aimed at riders who wanted the classic compact Sportster format with more punch than the 883 models.

The 1200 Sportster became one of Harley-Davidson’s most recognizable platforms for customization and personal expression. It was popular with new riders, urban riders, and longtime enthusiasts alike because it combined manageable size with strong aftermarket support and a long-running factory parts ecosystem. Over the years it also served as the basis for some of the line’s most familiar modern Sportster variants, including the 1200 Custom, 1200C, 1200T, 1200X Forty-Eight, Iron 1200, and Roadster-era models.

Harley-Davidson’s traditional air-cooled Sportster family was ultimately phased out as the company moved the nameplate into a new liquid-cooled generation beginning in 2021 and 2022, bringing the long-running XL 1200 era to a close after the 2022 model year.
