The Story of the Street Glide Special

Introduced for the 2014 model year, this nameplate marked Harley-Davidson’s move to give the batwing-faired touring platform a more aggressive, stripped-down “hot-rod bagger” character. It arrived as part of the Project RUSHMORE-era Touring updates, bringing a darker look and a more performance-oriented touring attitude while keeping the long-distance comfort and integrated luggage that define the brand’s big touring machines. In Harley-Davidson’s lineup, it sat as a sportier, better-equipped alternative to the standard version, aimed at riders who wanted factory-custom style without stepping up to a full CVO model.

Over its run, the model became closely associated with blacked-out finishes, upgraded infotainment and lighting, and Harley-Davidson’s evolving touring chassis and suspension revisions. It remained a core part of the Grand American Touring family through the late 2010s and early 2020s, reflecting the company’s shift toward factory-custom baggers with stronger visual identity and more premium touring hardware. Enthusiasts often viewed it as one of the most recognizable modern Harley baggers because it combined the classic batwing fairing silhouette with a cleaner, lower-slung stance.

For the 2024 model year, Harley-Davidson launched an all-new Street Glide and moved the lineup forward under that revised name, which ended this nameplate’s continuous run after the 2023 model year. As a result, this model is best understood as a distinct 2014–2023 touring nameplate that bridged Project RUSHMORE-era Harley-Davidson design with the brand’s newer generation of factory baggers.
