The Story of the Sidecar for ULTRA

Harley-Davidson’s Ultra sidecar was part of the company’s long-running touring sidecar family and was offered as the more comfort-oriented, better-equipped version of the basic sidecar package. The earliest Harley-Davidson documentation places the Ultra sidecar in the 1984 model-year era, and later factory literature shows the nameplate continuing through the 1990s and 2000s rather than being a short-lived special. Unlike a standalone motorcycle, it was a dedicated sidecar body and chassis assembly intended for Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycles, with Harley factory instructions and owner’s manuals repeatedly tying it to the FL touring range.

Over time, the Ultra sidecar evolved with updated mounting hardware, lighting and wiring, and later versions added integrated audio and passenger convenience features that distinguished it from the more basic TLE sidecar. Harley-Davidson’s 2004 owner’s manual for sidecars covers both the TLE and TLE-Ultra models, and factory parts catalogs continue to list Ultra sidecar components into the 2011 model year. That makes the Ultra sidecar a notable part of Harley-Davidson’s sidecar history: a factory-built touring attachment that remained in the lineup for decades and is closely associated with the brand’s big-twin highway-riding culture.
